Early winter sales boost national retail figures
New figures from the Canadian Retail Consortium today show that the Canadian retail sector expanded 3.5% year-on-year last year, compared with 2015's 2.3%, driven by significant expansion in department stores, specialty stores, online retail and mobile retail.
The 2015 annual report from the CRTC, released earlier today, notes that the retail industry was "robust" and "continues to add jobs and growth" in 2015. Despite the softness in domestic economic activity, the report says, the average household income rose 2.3% from $51,000 in 2014 to $57,000 last year.
Overall, the report says, sales rose 11.1% in 2015 to $1.19 billion.
More specifically, the retail sector grew by 9.2% in total, the biggest gain since 2011. The largest category of retail revenue, with almost a third of total retail sales, was non-residential goods, up by 4.1%. The category's growth was most intense in Canada, with a 22.2% increase in sales, which came in at $1.26 billion. Among sectors, apparel increased by 3.4%, and hardware and automotive up by 2.2%.
A majority of overall retail sales came from "hardcore" and "furniture" retail trade, with electronics up by 2.7%, and personal and family services up by 1.8%, with a 3.6% decline in hardware and electronics.
Non-residential goods and furniture accounted for about one quarter of all retail sales in Canada, up from about a third in 2010.
While Canada's overall economy grew just 0.2%, "hardcore" growth increased by 5.1%, and "furniture" growth grew by 2.7%.
The growth in the Canadian retail sector "has been driven by a combination of solid growth across the board, consistent growth across markets, increased investment, and a continuing strong Canadian dollar," the report notes.
For 2014, the total growth rate in Canada was driven by an "increase in gross domestic product (GDP)" of almost 5%. The increase was most pronounced in the first half of the year, with a total growth of 1.2% in the first six months, which equaled about 2.5% year-over-year. The growth was mostly in the manufacturing sector, with the largest component going to transportation. The number of sales per business fell to about 1.7, from more than 2 in 2010.
Gross domestic product in 2014 also increased by 1.1% in the third quarter, "a healthy improvement" from 4.8% in the third quarter of 2010 -
